Jennie Whitley - A Social Work Portfolio

Good Bye 2011 !

December 14, 2011
Considering my first blog for 2011 was welcome to 2011, I thought it fitting that this be a goodbye!  I realise one post in January and nothing again until December is rather slack.  I make no apologies, it is what it is!

I have had a rather eventful year and don't want to bore you with tiny details, my summary is I'm still loving my new job (which is now an old job... I've passed the 12 month mark, and, all is good on the home front, so no need to say more!

I am 2 subjects away from finishing the Bachelor of Health, Ageing and Community Services and have absoloutely loved the subjects so far, they have been very relevant to my work in the aged sector.  I would love to go further once this is finished, and have been googling more Gerontological study options.

We have a student here at the moment in our Allied Health Team, she is an exercise physiology student, our EP is mentoring her and she is off to all the different groups our EP runs.  Made me wonder about a SW student here .... maybe one day....

My old job at Centacare has recently been advertised and I understand they've found themselves a new grad from CQU.  I can't wait for them to start, will be good to be able to refer clients over when I have no more capacity and sharing ideas with other SW's is always a bonus.

Anyway, short and sweet.  I hope everyone has had a productive, happy and healthy 2011. Take care over the silly season!

Welcome to 2011

January 17, 2011
4 months since my last post, and so many changes and events.

Firstly, I wanted to take time to acknowledge and send out my best wishes to the majority of Queensland, my own town included, who are experiencing a major flood crisis.  My thoughts are especially are with those who have lost loved ones, and to those who have lost their homes and possessions, I hope that all the support you require (practical and financial) finds its way to you in the coming days, weeks, months and years.  I have f...

Job searching...still, and...a student...again!

September 13, 2010
Hi Everyone,
I realise it's been a few months since I posted and people may be wondering if I managed to find myself a new job, or, if I simply fell off the planet!
Well, I haven't found a new job, but it's ok because my contract was renewed.  Originally it was renewed for 2 months, to the end of August, then at the end of August they renewed me another month and have told me that they will just keep renewing month to month.  Part of me is pleased, part of me is still stressed, who can commit ...

Job searching....

May 24, 2010
I am excited to be back here adding an update to my life as a social worker!  It's been about 7 months since I submitted my final assessment piece.  In that time I've moved house and have been working in my first ever social work role!  I've also attended my graduation ceremony, put a hot heavy black robe on and a hat and received a piece of paper that says I've finished the requirements for a Bachelor of Social Work!  Yay for me.

Just today I logged into my contact page and found quite a num...

My portfolio - finally ready for submission - but not finished!

October 11, 2009
I was going to use the title - My portfolio - Completed, but then I reflected and I have decided that it's not finished.  It's ready for submission for the purposes of my university assessment, but now that I have put all this time and effort into it, I would like to keep it as a work in progress for the rest of my career.  I can see the usefulness of having and maintaining this site as I now plan on using it as support in any future job applications.

In the meantime, I present my summary of...

Wide Bay HACC Conference - 8th October 2009

October 9, 2009
I was off to Hervey Bay yesterday for the Annual Wide Bay HACC Conference.  Thought I'd post a little bit about it here because I found it a really interesting day.  There were 2 keynote speakers and a couple of workshops.  The first keynote speaker was Helen Glover.  If you ever get the opportunity to hear her speak, I highly encourage you to go.  She is from an organisation called Enlightened Consultants and spoke on the topic of mental health from a lived perspective.  I was all ears.  She...

The creation of my portfolio

September 30, 2009
I have spent the last 3 months putting together my portfolio.  This has involved me rummaging through a mountain of previously submitted assessments and certificates for various training sessions I have attended in an attempt to decide what I should include here.  Another huge chunk of time has been taken up by reading the wealth of material out there about creating portfolios and another (much smaller) amount of material devoted specifically to social work portfolios.  I did not find much wh...

About Me

Finally - the end of my uni studies draws to a close and I am soon to sign off as 'Jennie Whitley - Wife, mother of 2 girls, (responsible) dog owner (and dog lover), sister, daughter, friend - and, after 5 years of ups and downs - SOCIAL WORKER' A self confessed internet junkie, an online portfolio seemed a logical submission for my final assessment - my Social Work Portfolio. Adding a blog was something I've added last minute - with no current idea as to where the blog will head, we'll just wait and see if it is something I update as time moves forward, or if this whole site remains as is and just another submitted assessment, potentially never to be looked at again. For those who have stumbled this way, welcome, pull up a chair, enjoy a cuppa and read as much or as little as you want.
